ABSTRACT

In today’s digital realm, Filipino learners’ science achievement in standardized test lags in comparison with those of other countries around the globe. Additional challenge was set forth by the rise of the new normal scheme in the country’s educational system demanding for the use of more maximized technological tools. Despite the advent of technology, local studies associating  different modes and platforms in reinforcing science learning through pedagogical approaches in preparation to the New Normal remain scarce. This article provides the need for one as it attempts to serve as the first critical review on technological tools to be incorporated in teaching science across learning levels. This study explicates three classifications of tools to cater various learning continuity plans: (a) Distance Online Resources; (b) Distance Online Tools; and (c) Blended Learning Tools. This study  also offers assistive guidelines and frameworks for science educators in utilizing suitable technological tools for various teaching and learning contexts. The study further underscores the challenges and implications of integrating technological tools in science classrooms, thus, attempting to provide assistance to education’s stakeholders and the need for further studies on tools that can be utilized in the new normal teaching scheme.

ABSTRACT

Educational reforms are continuously crafted to improve many aspects of teaching and learning including the development of authentic performance tasks engineered through the Goal, Role, Audience, Situation, Product/Performance, and Standards (GRASPS) Model. These real-world problems provide opportunities enabling students to produce solutions, manage situations, and develop different perspectives while also enabling teachers to transform their students to be knowledge producers and not merely knowledge consumers or keepers. With the rapid growth of studies about the effectiveness of performance assessments, the implementation of GRASPS creates its own space in the world of educational research. Against this backdrop, the study sought to determine the impediments experienced by teachers and students in selected schools through an expert-validated instrument. Based on the responses of 65 teachers and 367 participating students, findings revealed that in using GRASPS, the problems of teachers were as follows: administering group tasks, the insufficient time to meet all the target outputs, and the inadequate facilities for the fulfilment of complex tasks. On the students’ part, the problems were:  lack of guidance in doing the performance assessments, ways to collaborate with others during group tasks, and the limited time to complete them. Further research could be done on the teachers’ and students’ time management and planning, scaffolding for transfer techniques, and cooperative learning to further the implementation of authentic learning and to enhance the existing faculty development programs in different schools.

ABSTRACT

This phenomenological study provides a description of the phenomenon of conversion from drug addiction using the framework of transcendental phenomenological study by C. Moustakas.  It involves the use of personal experience, life story interviews, focus group discussion, interactions, and thematic reflections among selected Christian preachers who experienced drug addiction and the grace of conversion. The co-researchers in this study were five Christian preachers who have recovered from drug addiction for about five to ten years, all males and known members of the Christian faith community. Results showed that each of them possessed different experiences of conversion such as: from curse to blessing, from selfishness to selflessness, from mundane to transcendence, and from being a rock to gold. They experienced healing as something that comes after desiring the good of others and transcending from selfishness to selflessness. This study further identifies the primordial element in the conversion experience as the openness of oneself to get in touch with the inner self.
