ABSTRACT

Gender-based violence (GBV) has generated interest from researchers and helping professionals since the surge of the women’s movement in the Philippines. Meanwhile, HIV-AIDS gained similar attention with the disclosure of the first case of the country in mid-80s. The intersectionality of these phenomena has been studied elsewhere but is yet to be investigated locally.  With this in mind, this study attempted to explore the experiences of people with Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (PLHIVs) who have experienced GBV with focus on the subsequent psychosocial and mental health issues. The research generated data through focus group discussions with 24 purposively-sampled participants from highly vulnerable groups in three major Philippine cities.  Thematic analysis revealed that the participants experienced sexual, emotional/psychological, economic, verbal, and physical forms of GBV along with manifestations of stigma and discrimination. There were also ensuing emotional and psychological trauma, depression, internalized homophobia, health risks, and risk-taking behaviors.  It is valuable to consider that the consequent risk-taking and self-injurious tendencies may have played a role in the participants’ HIV infection.

Thimuay Mbeng and the Imbing Clan: Their Role in the Christianization of the Subanen in Lapuyan, Zamboanga Peninsula (1912-1946)

Kimberly F. Apatan-Lusay

Mindanao State University-Marawi

ABSTRACT

This article relates to the family history of the Imbing clan of Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur with special focus on its patriarch, Thimuay Mbeng. Mbeng was a chieftain of the Subanens in Lapuyan, an ethnic group in Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao. He welcomed the American Protestant missionaries that brought not only a new religion but also the western way of life that eventually led to socio-cultural change in his community. Enforcement of these changes became spontaneous for Mbeng’s offspring as some of them succeeded him as political leaders and as others were among the first of their people to graduate from a Bible School and benefited from public school education. Thus, his descendants were among the first church leaders and public servants in the community.

ABSTRACT

Indigenous Peoples are considered important in the Philippines because through them, we can try to identify who we are as Filipinos and where we came from. The focus of this study was to examine the cultural consciousness of the Alangan Mangyans of Mindoro and The Ibanags of Isabela in relation to their folk culture. This is an Ethnographic research aimed to construct middle-level understandings and views directly from data analysis, participatory observations, focus group discussion, and deconstructions among the two cultures. The paper has three objectives: 1) to expose the folk cultures of the Ibanags and Mangyangs based on their lived experiences, 2) to extract learnings, themes and values from this study, and 3) to understand the implications of these exposition to their lives as Indigenous people. The findings revealed that the Ibanags and Mangyans culture elicit deeper commitment to their cultures, love among their families, and stewardship of God’s creation.  The values/themes learned from their culture evoked and unraveled the commitment of each family member/clan to be closer and to value one another’s presence as part of a community.  As a conclusion, the study, through their folk culture, can enumerate reasons and discoveries why these indigenous people should continue to appreciate their Folk cultures especially their implications to the enhancement of their community life and values.  As Culture through their Folk Literature becomes integral in their existence, new relationships are born and mutual sharing of love, life, pains, and faith takes place. The Folk Literature of the Ibanags and Mangyangs must take shape in every celebration of the community.

ABSTRACT

Drawing on Halliday’s Theory of Transitivity with language constructs critically examined through van Dijk’s Ideological Discourse Analysis, this study determined ideologies in the banner headlines from three selected Philippine daily broadsheets; namely, Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, and Manila Bulletin about President Rodrigo Duterte and his first 100 days in his office. The paper elucidated how these ideologies are created and how social identity is shaped through the linguistic choices of the journalists. Also, the Transitivity analysis of the 80 banner headlines revealed that the broadsheets portrayed the Philippine president as an active agent mostly through the verbal process with circumstances highly related to his duties and responsibilities as a national leader. This observation is supported by the results of Ideological Discourse Analysis revealing the following ideologies as major themes: President Duterte: (1) as a sayer, (2) as a national leader with a strong personality; and (3) his conflicts. These ideologies were found to be constructed through mapping the ideas in the headlines’ language domains.
