Has the School “run well” since the Pandemic began?

Marco S. Saez

Languages and Literature Department, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

The paper aims to assess how De La Salle University-Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) has been managed since the pandemic began, specifically in the teaching and learning process.  The term “the school runs well” is explained in The Identity Criteria for the Vitality of Lasallian Education Ministry, a document released in April 2020, which aims to provide principles that will distinctly characterize Lasallian education.   To contextualize, the paper starts with a description of the situation of DLSU-D when the pandemic was still starting.  Afterwards, it narrates the measures taken during the suspension of onsite or face-to-face classes. The coverage is from March 2020 to September 2020 – the months leading to the start of the new school year.  Documents released during this period and results of survey questionnaires from the students, parent, faculty, and administration sector were analyzed for this purpose.  The paper concludes with some reflections and recommended courses of actions based on the results of the evaluation.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find and analyze the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process of the new DLSU-D course design framework during this time of pandemic. The study also determined the factors affecting the new design course’s effectiveness. The respondents of the study are all college students of DLSU-D enrolled during the first semester of SY 2020-2021 and all the faculty members. The total number of students enrolled in this semester was selected using complete enumeration so that the result is free of sampling error. To measure the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process, a self-made questionnaire was constructed based on the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) and was validated by some experts. To describe and analyze the causal relationship among the factors, Factor Analysis (FA) with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), was utilized. Factor Analysis revealed that the Instructor Presence explained the largest variation of the effectiveness of the new framework model. The SEM results revealed that causal relationships exist between the factors. The most influential indicator in the measurement of the effectiveness of the new framework model is under the learning factor. It is the belief of the students that their skills on the subject improved.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to check the well-being of the faculty members of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas amidst the pandemic. The respondents of the study is the set of all faculty members for the first semester of school year 2020-2021 and second semester of school year 2019-2020. To determine their well-being when the online classes started until the implementation of the new DLSU-D framework, two identical surveys were conducted. The first was held sometime in August which is the end of second semester SY 2019-2020, then another in the midterm period of the first semester SY 2020-2021. The administration would like to know if there are significant changes in the well-being of the faculty members. A total of 382 faculty members participated in the study. Results revealed that all areas of concern are generally very good with mean responses of at least 3.50 except for the area of personal concerns. This area was evaluated as good only by the faculty members. The t-tests revealed that the well-being of faculty members have significant changes in terms of Institutional Support and Instruction/Teaching Training. The rest of the areas of concerns have no significant changes with p-values greater than 0.05.

ABSTRACT

This paper examined the experiences of the Center for Innovative Learning Programs, an educational technology office, during the pandemic. The pandemic forced a sudden shift in teaching platforms for many teachers that impacted teacher engagement. Central to this platform shift is the Learning Management System (LMS), which became the primary tool in flexible learning. Thus, the need to monitor teachers’ engagement is crucial to determine the effectiveness of the learning experience and the interventions made during the pandemic. However, there is currently a lack of theoretical models and frameworks to guide academic institutions. This paper aims to bridge this gap through a heuristic inquiry approach. Personal reflections on the policies and LMS features were translated into narratives that were validated via researcher triangulation. The findings yielded three key dimensions of policy, universality, and diversity, that shaped the monitoring of teacher engagement. The researchers propose the use of the dimensions of universality features of the LMS. The Monitoring Framework for Teacher LMS Engagement was also developed to guide academic administrators towards an effective monitoring. This study contributes to the theoretical gap in e-learning monitoring.

ABSTRACT

In line with the general goal of implementing competency-based learning to ensure that students are acquiring the essential knowledge and skills to achieve academic competence in the DLSU-D Senior High School, a preliminary survey on students’ self-perceived and teacher-measured academic competence in selected core and specialized subjects from different tracks was conducted. Using a descriptive-survey design that involves an online survey method, results showed varying degrees of respondents’ self-perceived and teacher-measured academic competence mean ratings among grade levels and strand/track. Association between self-perceived and teacher-measured academic competence using Pearson correlation coefficient showed ranges from non-significant correlation as shown in Grade 11 HUMSS and ICT and Grade 12 ABM, ICT, and HE to significant correlation as shown in Grade 11 ABM, STEM, and HE and Grade 12 HUMSS and STEM. Coefficient of determination among clustered surveys showing correlation revealed that teacher-measured competency can only be explained or associated with self-perceived competency from 2.53% (Grade 12 STEM) to 16.16% (Grade 11 HE) of variability. Nonetheless, the determination of association between self-perceived and teacher-measured competency can be used as a tool to measure alignment of pedagogy to expected learning outcomes which can be explored in future studies with the application of other relevant tools.
