Nishida and Mercado on the “I-Thou” phenomenon: convergence and divergence in culturally rooted thoughts

Edgardo B. Garnace

Social Sciences Department, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

This study draws on comparative philosophy to construct an image of the person in its oriental roots in the I-Thou relationship framework using the thoughts of Nishida Kitaro (Japan) and Leonardo Mercado (Philippines) which leads to another understanding of the I-Thou.  In their cultural epistemology, the self in the I -Thou relations has a meaning-shift in the light of concepts that bridge the primordial distance of the self and the other. To locate the self in the concept of basho (place) in Nishida’s thought makes one see I as the non-I, the nothingness as interconnectedness principle. The linguistic evidence kita (I-You) appears in Mercado’s thought to psychically obliterate the self as individual and derives an immediate pronouncement of a socio-dialogical self locating one’s true identity in the family and in the sakop (in- group).  In this non-dualistic view of the person confirmed by two Asian philosophers, we are instructed that the Self standing as an individual separate from the other ceases to exist. The I is immediately inter-relational in Nishida’s extinguished self and in Mercado’s non-individualistic self. Both look at the I and Thou relations as engulfed in the transformed sense of self, where its identity is in the Other, and the Other is in the I.

Knowledge Audit of Alternative Learning System’s Instructional Managers in the City of Dasmariñas as Basis for a Training Program

Jonathan V. Gochuico

Languages and Literature Department, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

The paper determined the human-centered assets of Alternative Learning System-Dasmariñas’s instructional managers to establish points for a training program using survey and interviews. It was established that instructional managers need to exhibit knowledge beyond their expertise given the nature of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and teaching assignments. Instructional Managers are familiar with the mission-vision of ALS but exhibited incongruencies as regards program implementation both in implementing its nonformal mode and external engagements.  It is discerned that clarifying the mission-vision and conducting training programs for organizational concerns should be done. Instructional Managers should be trained in the planning and implementation of learning materials, institution of linkages and partnerships, and levelling of internal practices.

Debelopment ng Batayang Kurso sa Filipino bilang Banyagang Wika: Hango sa Karanasan ng Pamantasang De La Salle-Dasmariñas

Christian George C. Francisco

Languages and Literature Department, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

A contrastive study of the anti-corruption discourse from the perspective of proximization theory

Zhao Kai and Zhu Jieyu

College of Liberal Arts and Communication Graduate Studies, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to use the proximization approach to discuss the anti-corruption discourse in Chinese and western media. Using anti-corruption news reports of Chinese and western media as linguistic data to build two corpora for the research, the researcher addressed diverging language strategies employed to construe China’s anti-corruption campaign, and their hidden epistemic stance-taking and ideologies of Chinese and western media in a contrastive approach via lexico-grammatical resources. It is found that Chinese media employs more temporal proximization strategies to legitimize the continuity of the long-term anti-corruption policy and more positive axiological proxmization strategies to strengthen the credibility and confidence of the people in the Party and government, while the western media adopts more spatial proximization strategies to enhance magnitude of China’s corruption and more negative axiological proximization strategies to intentionally delegitimize the effectiveness of China’s anti-corruption policy.

The Associations Among Gratitude, Spirituality, and Positive/Negative Affect: A Test of Mediation

Jeannie A. Perez

College of Liberal Arts and Communication Graduate Studies, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

To expand studies linking gratitude, spirituality, and subjective well-being, this study aimed at examining the role of spirituality and gratitude on the affective aspects of subjective well-being (SWB), which are positive and negative. Gratitude is a grateful disposition measured by Gratitude Questionnaire.  Spirituality refers to the feelings and sensations of daily spiritual life measured by Daily Spiritual Experience Scale. Positive affect refers to the extent to which a person feels enthusiastic, active, and alert. Negative affect refers to the extent to which people feel stressed, upset, guilty, scared, hostile, irritable, ashamed, nervous, jittery, and afraid. PA and NA were measured by the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale. The study’s respondents were 415 Filipino adolescents and young adults who completed the questionnaires. Most of the respondents were females and Roman Catholics. Gratitude and spirituality were positively associated with positive affect. More grateful and more spiritual respondents reported increased frequency of positive affect.  Negative association was found between gratitude and negative affect.  Grateful respondents reported lower scores in negative affect. Interestingly, non- statistically significant positive association was found between spirituality and negative affect, which supports some previous studies with similar findings.  Spirituality mediated the association between gratitude and positive affect. These findings revealed a differential impact of gratitude and spirituality on the affective aspects of SWB.   Implications of the results are discussed in counselling contexts.  Implications for future research are also discussed.

Effectiveness of the Aksiyon sa Migrasyon Program on Underachievement and Low Adaptability of Learners with OFW Parents

Marvin A. Melendres

De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines

ABSTRACT

The primary objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of Aksiyon sa Migrasyon Program on increasing achievement and adaptability of underachieving learners with OFW parents, specifically creating an evidence-based intervention program for such students. The study employed a quantitative method – experimental design. The participants of the study were 40 students from grades 10 to 12 of Congressional Integrated High School of School Year 2019-2020. There is a significant difference within the pre-test and post-test scores on the adaptability and underachievement of the experimental group before and after the implementation of Aksiyon sa Migrasyon Program. On the other hand, the variables did not exhibit significant differences within the pre-test and postest scores of the control group. Finally, the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups were analyzed using t-test for independent samples. Hence, results revealed no significant differences between the post test scores of the experimental and control groups in underachievement and adaptability.  It was concluded that the Aksiyon sa Migrasyon program was not effective in increasing the achievement and adaptability of the participants. The researcher suggests the evaluation of other variables such as length of implementation and integration of related factors, which could strengthen the intervention program used in the study.
