Abstract

Play is the lifeblood of children. Unfortunately, many children in today’s world stay inactive or are engaged in indirect forms of play. Furthermore, children who have experienced abuse or neglect are often withdrawn from constructive play. Limited studies have explored the role of play in the lives of abused children in rehabilitation centers in the Philippines. This case study used psychoanalytic and Piaget’s cognitive theories of play to explore the role of play in the rehabilitation of children who have experienced abuse and are now in a rehabilitation center. Purposeful sampling was used to select 10 participants. Data were collected through interviews and were analyzed thematically. The emerging themes show that play helped the abused and neglected children cope with trauma and unpleasant emotions, and that play provided holistic development that included sense of self-worth, positive thinking, and cognitive, physical, creative and social skills. The study suggests the need for research-based play facilities and the employment of play therapists in the rehabilitation center.

Abstract

The police task is to protect the people and their properties. It is expected that they exercise vigilance while performing their duties. They are the implementers of law. However, police image continues to deteriorate because some of them are involved in criminal acts like drug trafficking, hold-upping, kidnapping, robbery, et al. For this reason, this study was conducted to revisit the work values and morale of selected police officers in the province of Cavite. The specific research questions were: (1) What are the very important work values of the respondents; (2) What is the level of their morale? and (3) Is there a significant relationship between the respondents’ very important work values and their level of morale? The study used descriptive-correlational quantitative research design. It involved 449 selected police officers from the province of Cavite.  They were chosen purposively using the following criterion: must have been in the service for three years and above. The study revealed ten very important work values of the police and they had high morale to very high morale. It also revealed that there was a significant relationship between work values and morale. The findings of the study led to the conclusion that the police respondents considered these values as their guiding principle in performing their role as policemen.

Abstract

This study was conducted to know the level of implementation of intervention programs of the community and schools in preventing child abuse in Dasmariñas City, Cavite. The respondents of the study are the Barangay Committee on Child Protection members and School Personnel. The study also determined the challenges they encounter in preventing child abuse, as well as the coping mechanism applied and their best practices. To measure the level of implementation of the intervention programs, a self-made questionnaire was constructed based on the Department of Justice Comprehensive Program on Child Protection and was validated by an expert. T-test was utilized to know the significant difference in the level of implementation of intervention programs. Results revealed that all the indicators are highly implemented, thereby a framework for the sustainability of these intervention strategies was developed.

Abstract

This paper sought to determine Cavite Studies Center’s communication of construction/reconstruction of Emilio Aguinaldo as a Philippine National Hero. The study interviewed four historians who served CSC either as directors or researchers. Official communication materials and activities of the organization were also analyzed. Results revealed that CSC made collective efforts to publicize information on Aguinaldo that was meant to address misconceptions and historical biases. From a socio-cultural perspective, this study shed light on the need to consider how reputable organizations have the power to culturally influence historical perspectives of importance, such as discourse surrounding nationhood and heroism.
