ABSTRACT

This paper begins with unravelling the tenets of modernism versus the tenets of postmodernism and examines how the principles of the latter became popular especially with the onset of postcolonial studies. Applying these critical approaches to the study of religion can be a fraught exercise but can also prove enlightening in understanding the suppression and re-emergence of native religions in colonized spaces. The postmodernist paradigm can be utilized to critically evaluate factors that led to the emergence of various indigenization movements in societies that were once colonized, such as the Philippines. This study explores the revival of the ancient Filipino system of belief in Bathala, the Supreme God, through the interpretation of the symbols of Baybayin, the ancient Filipino system of writing. It finally addresses the need for an alternative discourse on the renaissance of the precolonial culture in the Philippines, particularly in the field of religion. Despite the subjectivity of postmodernism as a paradigm, the paper argues that an attempt to uncover the meaning of Bathala will help the present Filipino generation to understand and appreciate the roots of their spirituality.

ABSTRACT

Education extension programs of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) greatly adhere to the Lasallian mission and to its vision and mission in promoting a Christian and humane society. The university implements community development programs basically to uplift the lives of the underprivileged and to provide accessible education extension programs for the youth-at-risk through the Hatid-Aral, Balik-Aral, and Night College Programs. As the university’s lead unit for extension services, the Lasallian Community Development Center conducted this impact study to examine the adequacy and effectiveness of the university’s implemented education extension programs based on the perceptions of the programs’ beneficiaries. A survey questionnaire was used as primary data collection tool designed to focus on key areas or domains of assessment that measure the adequacy and effectiveness of the programs. The overall results of the study show that the respondents have a strong satisfaction on the overall performance of DLSU-D’s Education Extension Programs with a strong agreement to their effectiveness and agreement to their adequacy. Therefore, the overall combined result of the study revealed that the respondents have a strong or high recognition of the adequacy and effectiveness of DLSU-D’s Education Extension Programs.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the investigative capabilities of crime investigators and the problems encountered in handling eight focus crimes in CALABARZON using the descriptive method of research. The instrument was distributed conveniently to 365 criminal investigator-respondents with a turnout of 325 or 89.04% questionnaire retrieval rate. Basic and inferential statistical tools were used to analyze and interpret the data gathered. The maximum number of cases filed by investigators is 500, and the minimum is zero or none. Physical injury is the case with most convictions; however, it is the most dismissed case due to noncooperation of the victim/complainant. It was also revealed that the criminal investigators are very highly capable as to their skills, attitude, and knowledge in the conduct of their duties and responsibilities. However, even though they are highly capable in handling the eight focus crimes, they still encountered serious problems in investigating the index crimes. In light of the study’s findings, the Philippine National Police can devise incentive programs to encourage criminal investigators to improve themselves and become more effective in the performance of their duties.

ABSTRACT

It is undeniable that machine translations are becoming a trend nowadays for their convenience, almost perfect accuracy, and immediacy. This paper is focused on the AI tool ChatGPT. The advent of AI in their translation process such as ChatGPT brings convenience but, at the same time, challenges. ChatGPT has been one of the applications that revolutionized the translation process. However, the elephant in the room is, “Is there still a need for human translators should they be replaced by these translation apps?” In this regard, this paper is directed to two overarching questions. First is “What kind of challenges are caused by ChatGPT for translators?” Second is “What strategies can translators adopt to address these problems?” To comprehensively respond to these queries, the descriptive method has been adopted. The participants of this paper are 18 licensed human translators, selected through incidental sampling, who all work in the IELTS language training center and process an average of 2,000-3,000 words per day. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. This paper has found that (i) ChatGPT is advantageous in the reduction of workload, particularly with languages that the translator is unfamiliar with; (ii) there are uncertainties with the integration of ChatGPT in the translation process; and (iii) there is a need for professional translators to develop and enhance their language skills and their competencies that are pertinent to translation.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated parents’ awareness and preventive practices related to child abuse, with a focus on children with cognitive impairment. Utilizing a survey questionnaire and group interviews, the research found that parents demonstrated a high level of awareness about the nature of abuse and preventive practices, particularly in the areas of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Although survey results indicated that parents often implement preventive measures, the group interview revealed a perceived need for more comprehensive seminars and training. The participants emphasized the importance of research-based information, guidance on government assistance, and support services. In conclusion, the study advocates for ongoing efforts to enhance parents’ awareness and preventive measures against child abuse and proposes a school-based program as a practical solution.

ABSTRACT

This research explored the development of values among students at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) and aimed to identify the values that the students developed and the programs and activities that contributed to the development of these values. This employed the “Domains of Enabling the Lasallian Mission” (DELM) to describe and assess students’ progress in the areas of faith, spiritual practice, growth in freedom, association and fraternity, and solidarity and care for the world through education. The methodology combined quantitative and qualitative approaches and utilized summative content analysis. Senior college students from various colleges within DLSU-D responded to open-ended questions. The study analyzed these responses by identifying values as codes and extracting significant statements for analysis. The findings indicated a wide range of values developed by DLSU-D students, with a strong emphasis on faith, service, and responsibility. These values resonate with the goals of Lasallian education, which prioritize the holistic development of students. The insights of the students revealed the extent of their growth in Lasallian identity formation in relation to DELM. Thus, the findings contributed to understanding the formation of Lasallian identity among DLSU-D students.
