Abstract
Compliment is one of the essential speech acts of daily communication (Holmes, 1988). This study aimed to investigate the similarities and differences in the compliment responding strategies used by South Korean and South African international students in China. Data was collected using a discourse completion task questionnaire written in English (Blum-Kulka et al., 1989), covering four domains: appearance, personality, ability, and possessions. A total of 40 South Korean and South African international students participated in the survey. The results showed significant differences in the compliment response strategies employed by the two groups of students. Overall, both groups used the “Accept” strategy most frequently and the “Reject” strategy least frequently. However, South African students used the “Accept” strategy much more often than their South Korean counterparts while South Korean students relied on the “Evade” strategy to a much greater extent than South African students. Additionally, South African students utilized “Combination” strategies more frequently than South Korean students. Across the four discourse scenarios, the two groups exhibited similar compliment response strategies only for ability-based compliments. For the other three scenarios, their compliment response strategies differed significantly. These differences can be largely attributed to the distinct linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the two student groups, as both unconsciously transferred aspects of their native language and culture into their use of English. Overall, the compliment response patterns of South African students were more closely aligned with those of native English speakers. This is likely due to the status of English as an official second language in South Africa, which provides South African students with more extensive exposure to and familiarity with English language and cultural conventions, compared to the South Korean students for whom English is a foreign language.

Abstract
Academic entitlement (AE) denotes an expectation of academic success without corresponding effort, reflecting an entitlement mentality prevalent among students. This study focuses on assessing AE prevalence among Filipino undergraduate students in the Cavite region and its association with key predictors: narcissism, internal and external locus of control, and family functioning. The researcher collected data online from 500 undergraduate students using established measurement scales like the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16, Internal-External Locus of Control Short Scale-4, McMaster Family Assessment Device, and Academic Entitlement Scale. The relationships among these variables were examined by employing path analysis via the SMART PLS computer application. The analyses reveal that narcissism and external locus of control significantly contribute to AE, highlighting the influence of inflated self-perceptions and reliance on external factors in shaping entitlement attitudes. Conversely, internal locus of control and family functioning show no significant association with AE in this context. Beyond academia, the findings suggest broader implications for the educational landscape in the Philippines. Unchecked AE poses risks to educational quality and student progress, demanding proactive measures. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for ongoing exploration of AE within the Philippine context, accompanied by policy recommendations and program interventions to address its impact effectively.

Abstract
The preoccupation with equipping science learning among students has engendered educators to explore various approaches and strategies in the online setup. A plethora of studies promoted the use of the 5E inquiry-based approach to augment science learning. Yet, a dearth of studies employing this approach is observed especially in the New Normal setup, hence, the conduct of the study. The study ventured into how senior high school teachers’ and students’ experiences and strategies can serve as inputs to the implementation and development of the 5E inquiry-based instruction model in online science teaching following a case-study design. The participants of the study were purposively sampled. Qualitative data were generated from the answers of the teachers to open-ended questions and thematically analyzed. A focused group discussion with students was conducted to triangulate the data. Data revealed a recalibration of the model wherein the “Evaluate” phase is an integrative phase of all phases and teachers exemplify an iterative process of “Explain” and “Elaborate” phases in the online setup. The researchers recommend the development and validation of lesson exemplars for biology, physics, and chemistry capitalizing on the adapted teaching model.

Abstract
The main focus of this research is the lived experiences of volunteer teachers in the E-Tulay program. The present study aims to determine the lived experiences and the meaning of being a volunteer teacher. Six co-researchers for this study were all volunteer teachers in E-Tulay from 2021-2023. The lived experiences of the primary researcher were also included in the dataset following the hermeneutical phenomenological framework and methodology which was used to guide the study. Based on the interpretation of the generated lived experiences, symbolic representations of being an E-Tulay teacher, internal and external forces that affect volunteerism, pakikipagkapwa-tao, personal and professional growth of volunteer teachers, volunteers’ acknowledgments and rewards and spearheading E-Tulay in action emerged as the core themes. Furthermore, the composite textural-structural description exposes the constant idea of change, commitment, and contribution in the lived experiences that comprise the essence of being an E-Tulay volunteer teacher. A poem based on the lived experiences of the volunteer teachers was constructed based on the aforementioned core themes and essences, representing the synthesis of the lived experiences of the co-researchers.

Abstract
In the province of Pampanga, Philippines, particularly from 2019-2022, homicide victimization is considered the third highest crime category in the region. This study aimed to address this gap by exploring and evaluating the factors contributing to homicide victimization in Pampanga during the specific years. The descriptive research design was employed using the survey questionnaire and secondary data sources to answer the objectives of the study. A survey questionnaire was distributed purposively to 101 Police Commissioned Officers (PCO) and Police Non-Commissioned Officers (PNCO) stationed at various police stations in Pampanga. The study revealed that the homicide incidents in the province of Pampanga, Philippines from 2019-2022 occurred often in the evening and midnight during the first quarter. Homicide incidents can occur in public and private places and the perpetrators were sometimes under the influence of alcohol/liquor, and the weapons often used were guns/firearm, knives, and other blunt/bladed instruments. The motives of the perpetrators are usually out of anger or hatred, heated argument and revenge, and the often modus operandi were shooting the victims and stabbing or hacking the victims. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the crime prevention programs to prevent the occurrence of homicide incidents in Pampanga, Philippines were always implemented. Positive correlations were observed to the time of occurrence, involvement of perpetrators, weapons used, motives and community involvement.

Abstract
While extensive research has been conducted on the general impact of humor on social relationships, the literature is notably sparse regarding the specific role of failed humor in organizational contexts, especially concerning leader-member exchange (LMX). This study aims to fill that gap by examining the effects of a leader’s failed humor on LMX and investigating whether employees’ attitudes toward humor can buffer this relationship. Employing a cross-sectional explanatory approach, the researchers distributed the Failed Humor in Leadership Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale, and the Leader-Member Exchange Scale through an online survey targeting Filipino employees across various industries. A total of 302 participants—comprising 40.7% males and 59.3% females—voluntarily responded to the online survey. Path analysis using the partial least squares regression method via SMART-PLS software was employed to analyze the data. The findings indicate that a leader’s failed humor negatively impacts LMX, and this effect is not alleviated by the employee’s attitude toward humor. Interestingly, the study also found that employees who value humor and are themselves humorous reported stronger LMX. Based on these insights, the researchers offer recommendations for improving LMX in instances where leaders’ attempts at humor do not succeed. Additionally, future research directions to further investigate this phenomenon were also offered.

Abstract
This linguistic study investigates the lexico-grammatical features of Chinese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners’ argumentative essays. The study utilizes corpus linguistic methods and natural language processing tools to analyze 1460 writing samples from an online learner corpus. Variations in linguistic complexity and sophistication of clause, phrase, and syntactic sophistication across different proficiency levels were examined using AntConc, Multidimensional Analysis Tagger, and TAASSC. The results indicate significant variances in lexico-grammatical complexity and sophistication features between low and high proficiency levels. The study revealed that proficiency levels of EFL learners had varying effects on clausal complexity, phrasal complexity, and syntactic sophistication. The study also identifies limitations in the natural language processing tool used for extracting target indices in argumentative essays. Overall, these findings have implications for EFL teaching, learning, and assessment, and for improving NLP tools.

Abstract
This study examined the digital media coverage of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, focusing on how narratives within China Daily constructed and communicated power. This critical juncture in international relations provided a unique opportunity to analyze media narratives that shaped public perception and policy discourse, particularly through the lens of China Daily, a significant voice in Chinese and global media. The objective was to dissect how China Daily’s reporting reflected and influenced geopolitical narratives, utilizing Teun van Dijk’s framework for news discourse analysis. This involved a detailed examination of the discourse strategies and ideological constructs in the coverage of the troop withdrawal. By analyzing 192 articles from China Daily published between April and September 2021, the study explored the construction of narratives and their underlying ideologies. Findings indicated that China Daily strategically framed the U.S. withdrawal in terms of regional instability and terrorism risks, emphasizing the consequences of what it portrayed as a hasty and irresponsible U.S. action. This narrative strategy was aligned with broader Chinese political stances on non-interference and respect for national sovereignty. This research contributed to the field by highlighting the role of media in shaping international perceptions and added a non-Western perspective to discourse studies on global military engagements.

Abstract
Research on teacher discourses is growing but only a few studies have focused on teachers’ construction of comments publicly posted on social media. Hence, this study aims at describing the polarity of comments and positioning of Filipino ESL teachers in their public Facebook comments via Systemic Functional Linguistics. A total of 281 public comments with 863 clauses publicly posted by ESL teachers on selected Facebook groups associated with ESL teaching were analyzed. Polarity (positive and negative polarity) was also analyzed and was further described via three types of positioning: Attitudinal, Dialogistic, and Intertextual. Results show that material processes heavily characterize the comments. The ESL teachers resort to the default material processes when writing comments related to ESL teaching and employment. Under polarity, positive clauses dominate over negative clauses. These comments heavily fall under Attitudinal Identities and seconded by Dialogistic and Intertextual Identities. This research hopes to contribute to the existing literature that explores the ever-changing nature of ESL teaching and employment, especially with the proliferation of public social media discourses.

Abstract
“Sakristan” is a 20-minute film series with eight episodes directed by Darryl Yap; it shows that love goes beyond religion and gender. The research analyzed if there are sources of inaccurate portrayals that may have harmful repercussions such as hatred, oppression, and stereotypes toward the LGBTQ+ community. The study employed a qualitative content analysis method wherein the researchers observed the film’s mise-en-scene in relation to its dialogues to better understand how ‘Sakristan” portrayed the LGBTQ+ community. By utilizing Burke’s (1945) Pentadic Analysis, Green and Brock’s (2000, as cited in Green et al., 2004) Narrative Transportation Theory, and Queer Theory, results show that there is a pervasive presence of stereotyping and mockery as prominent ideologies within the series, the portrayal of oppression through the mise-en-scene of Sakristan (2020) varied across different scenes, and negative implications constructed various forms of oppression that were evident in the whole series which were powerlessness, exploitation, violence, and marginalization. Within the context of globalization and expanding reach of media, cinematic productions possess the capacity to transcend geographic and cultural limitations, diffusing LGBTQ+ identities to a global audience. Furthermore, this serves as a reference to develop a deeper understanding toward the community and how society can promote inclusivity worldwide. This also allows the media to know their potential to exert influence on international perceptions and attitudes toward queer individuals.

Abstract
Generation Z, brought up in the era of pervasive technology and often labeled the “social media generation,” confronts elevated risks of depression, anxiety, and tragically, suicide (Abror et al., 2020). This study aimed to investigate the influence of parent-child communication on the happiness levels of Filipino individuals belonging to Generation Z, employing a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. The quantitative phase involved 109 Filipino Gen Z participants, with an average age of 20 years old. Subsequently, in the qualitative phase, six Gen Z participants and their parents engaged in answering qualitative inquiries. Regression analysis revealed a significant association between parent-child communication and happiness levels. Additionally, qualitative findings highlighted the role of effective parent-child communication in nurturing positive development and enhancing overall happiness among youth. Importantly, the research emphasized the necessity for parents to gain deeper insights into the psychosocial challenges encountered by Generation Z, while also underscoring the youth’s preference for open, non-judgmental conversations with their parents. These insights prompt considerations regarding the most effective parenting styles within the Filipino context for fostering the well-being of Generation Z. The implications extend to counseling and psychological intervention practices, advocating for interventions that foster constructive communication between parent and child.
